What Is ESD Flooring?

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) flooring is a specialized floor coating system engineered to control the build-up and dissipation of static electricity. In environments where sensitive electronic components, precision instrumentation, or explosive/flammable materials are present, uncontrolled static discharge events can cause catastrophic damage — destroying microchips worth thousands of dollars, corrupting data storage, triggering ignition in flammable environments, or injuring personnel.

Standard epoxy and concrete floors are electrically insulative. When personnel walk across them, static charges build up to thousands of volts — charges that discharge through contact with sensitive components. ESD flooring replaces this insulative surface with a controlled-resistance pathway, allowing charges to safely dissipate to ground at a rate slow enough to prevent discharge events.

ESD Dissipative vs. ESD Conductive: Which Classification Do You Need?

ESD flooring is classified by electrical resistance, and the correct classification depends on the sensitivity of the components or processes in the environment. Understanding the difference is essential to specifying the right system.

Most commercial ESD flooring installations in the GTA — electronics assembly plants, data centres, server rooms, and medical device manufacturing — require ESD-dissipative classification (10⁶ to 10⁹ ohms). ESD-conductive systems (below 10⁶ ohms) are specified for semiconductor fabrication clean rooms, military munitions storage, and defence electronics assembly. ANSI/ESD S20.20 Standard Compliance

The American National Standard ANSI/ESD S20.20 is the governing standard for ESD control programs in electronics manufacturing and assembly environments. It defines the performance requirements for all elements of an ESD control program — including flooring, footwear, workstation surfaces, and personnel grounding. Compliance with ANSI/ESD S20.20 is required or strongly preferred by major electronics OEMs, defence contractors, and aerospace primes when qualifying supplier facilities.

Our ESD flooring systems are designed to meet the electrical performance requirements of ANSI/ESD S20.20. At project completion, we conduct a formal resistance test survey across the installed floor using a standardized test method (ANSI/ESD STM7.1 for point-to-point resistance and point-to-groundable point resistance) and provide written test documentation. How Our ESD Epoxy System Works

A properly functioning ESD floor is not just a coating — it is a complete electrical system that integrates the floor coating with the building's grounding infrastructure. Here is how we design and install it:

Conductive Carbon-Loaded Primer

The foundation of our ESD system is a conductive primer loaded with carbon black particles. This primer performs two functions: it creates the primary conductive network within the coating system, and it provides excellent adhesion to the diamond-ground concrete substrate. The carbon black loading level and primer thickness are calibrated to achieve the target resistance range for the specified ESD classification.

ESD Epoxy Topcoat

The conductive primer is overcoated with a clear or pigmented ESD epoxy topcoat. This topcoat provides the wear surface, chemical resistance, and aesthetic finish while maintaining the electrical conductivity established by the primer layer. The combined primer-plus-topcoat system produces a uniform, consistent resistance across the full floor area within the target specification range.

Copper Grounding Grid and Ground Points

Bare copper foil strips are embedded between the primer and topcoat in a grid pattern across the floor. These strips are connected to ground points — typically threaded inserts installed in the concrete at specified intervals — which are in turn bonded to the building's electrical ground system. This grounding grid ensures that static charges collected by the floor have a reliable, low-resistance path to earth ground, completing the discharge circuit safely.

Resistance Testing and Documentation

After installation, we conduct a systematic resistance test survey across the completed floor. We measure point-to-point resistance (floor to floor) and point-to-groundable point resistance (floor to ground) at multiple locations to verify that the installed system meets the specified resistance target uniformly. We provide written test results for each measurement location, along with system documentation including materials data sheets, application records, and ground point locations.

Available Finishes for ESD Epoxy Floors

ESD epoxy floors do not have to look industrial or institutional. We offer a range of finish options that maintain full ESD performance:

  • Grey: The most common ESD floor colour — professional, neutral, and practical for electronics manufacturing environments.
  • Light grey / dove grey: Preferred in clean-room adjacent spaces where reflectivity and cleanliness visibility matter.
  • Blue: Used in some electronics manufacturing environments where colour coding distinguishes ESD zones from non-ESD areas.
  • Green: Specified in some pharmaceutical and clean-room environments where green designates clean or controlled zones.
  • Custom colours: We can accommodate custom colour specifications for facilities with zoning colour standards. Note that certain pigments affect conductivity — we verify the complete system meets resistance specifications regardless of colour choice.

What is the difference between ESD dissipative and ESD conductive flooring?
ESD dissipative flooring has an electrical resistance of 10⁶ to 10⁹ ohms — it allows static charges to dissipate slowly and safely. ESD conductive flooring has resistance below 10⁶ ohms — it dissipates charges more rapidly. Most electronics manufacturing environments specify ESD dissipative. ESD conductive is required for semiconductor fabrication, explosive storage, and certain defence applications. We determine the correct classification based on your process requirements and applicable standards during the site assessment.
Do you provide test documentation after installation?
Yes — resistance testing and documentation is included in every ESD flooring installation we perform. We conduct a grid survey of point-to-point and point-to-groundable-point resistance measurements across the completed floor, and provide written test results with measurement locations mapped to the floor plan. This documentation can be used for ANSI/ESD S20.20 program compliance, facility qualification, or regulatory submission.
How long does an ESD epoxy floor last?
A properly installed ESD epoxy floor in a clean production environment typically maintains its resistance specifications for 10–15 years. The electrical properties of the conductive primer layer are stable over time — the coating does not "wear out" its conductivity under normal conditions. Surface wear from foot traffic and equipment may eventually require a topcoat refresh, but the grounding system and conductive primer remain functional. We recommend periodic re-testing every 2–3 years or after any significant floor repair to verify ongoing compliance.
Can ESD flooring be installed in an occupied facility?
Yes, with phased installation planning. We work with your facilities and ESD coordinator to section the floor and complete the installation in phases, maintaining uninterrupted access to production areas during the project. The diamond grinding step produces the most dust and disruption — we use dustless grinding equipment with HEPA filtration and can isolate the work area from sensitive production zones. We have experience coordinating ESD flooring installations in active production environments.
Is ESD flooring required for data centres?
ESD dissipative flooring is strongly recommended and often required by data centre design standards including TIA-942 (Telecommunications Infrastructure Standard for Data Centers). Many colocation providers and hyperscale data centre operators specify ESD flooring in their build standards. For raised-floor data centres, ESD flooring is typically installed on the raised access panels. For slab-floor data centres, it is applied directly to the concrete.
