Health Code Requirements for Restaurant Floors in Ontario
Restaurant epoxy flooring in Toronto must meet Ontario Regulation 493/17 — Food Premises, enacted under the Health Protection and Promotion Act. Section 23 of this regulation sets out the requirements for floors in food handling areas: they must be smooth, impervious to moisture, easily cleanable, and maintained in good repair. Grout lines, porous surfaces, cracked tiles, and rough concrete all fail this standard — and Toronto Public Health inspectors actively cite food premises for flooring deficiencies.

Slip Resistance: A Critical Safety Requirement

For wet commercial kitchen environments, the practical standard is a minimum Static Coefficient of Friction (SCOF) of 0.5 measured in the wet condition. Smooth epoxy without anti-slip additives typically measures 0.3–0.35 wet — well below the safe threshold.
Every commercial kitchen floor we install includes an aluminium oxide or silicon carbide anti-slip broadcast built into the topcoat. Coved Epoxy Base: What It Is and Why It Matters
One of the most important details in a compliant commercial kitchen floor installation is the coved base — and it's one that many flooring contractors get wrong or skip entirely. A coved base is a curved, continuous epoxy transition from the floor surface up the wall, typically 4–6 inches high, with a concave radius at the floor-wall junction rather than a 90-degree corner.
The 90-degree corner between a floor and wall is the single most difficult area to clean in a commercial kitchen. Debris, grease, and moisture accumulate in the corner and create persistent bacterial harborage points. Even with aggressive cleaning, a square corner retains contamination that a curved coved surface does not. Ontario Reg. 493/17 specifically references the need for floors to be "coved at the juncture of the floor and wall" in food preparation areas, and Toronto Public Health inspectors look for this detail.
Our coved base installation begins with a cant strip or pre-formed cove base form installed at the floor-wall junction. Epoxy mortar is trowelled over the cant strip to create a smooth, curved radius, then the wall epoxy coat is brought down over the cove and feathered into the floor system — creating a continuous, joint-free surface from floor to wall. The result is both compliant and dramatically easier to clean than any tiled or grouted wall base.
Chemical and Thermal Resistance
Commercial kitchens expose floors to a chemical environment that would rapidly degrade standard epoxy systems. Our restaurant-grade systems are specifically selected for resistance to the following:
- Animal fats and vegetable oils: Continuous fat exposure penetrates and softens inadequate coating systems. Our 100% solids epoxy base coats are impermeable to lipids.
- Acids (citric, acetic, lactic): Fruit juices, vinegar-based sauces, and dairy products are acidic. We use acid-resistant topcoat formulations rated for pH as low as 2.
- Alkaline cleaners and sanitizers: Commercial degreasers and quaternary ammonia sanitizers are highly alkaline. Our urethane topcoats resist pH up to 12 without surface degradation.
- Hot water and steam: Pressure washing at 140–160°F is standard in commercial kitchen cleaning. Our systems are specified for continuous water exposure up to 180°F and periodic steam at higher temperatures.
- Bleach and chlorinated sanitizers: Sodium hypochlorite (bleach) solutions are corrosive to many coating systems. Our restaurant topcoats are chlorine-resistant at standard sanitizing concentrations.

Minimizing Downtime: Night and Weekend Installation
