What Is Diamond Grinding?

Diamond grinding is the process of mechanically abrading concrete using rotating diamond-impregnated tooling to achieve a specific surface profile. It is the mandatory first step before any professional epoxy or polyaspartic floor coating application in Toronto.

Without diamond grinding, coatings bond to the surface lather — the weak, dusty cement paste layer on top of hardened concrete — rather than to the structural concrete itself. That bond fails. Every time.

Concrete Surface Profile (CSP) — What It Means

The ICRI (International Concrete Repair Institute) defines 10 standardized concrete surface profiles (CSP 1–10) based on surface roughness measured in micro-inches. CSP 1 is the smoothest; CSP 10 is the roughest.

Key Point: Laitance Must Be Removed First

Laitance is the weak surface layer of cement paste and fines that forms during concrete curing. It looks like solid concrete but has a fraction of the compressive strength. The coarse grinding pass removes it entirely, exposing the structural concrete aggregate underneath — this is the surface the coating bonds to.

Diamond Grinding vs Shot Blasting

Both methods achieve adequate CSP for epoxy, but they have different use cases:

  • Diamond grinding is preferred for residential garages, areas near walls (where blasting equipment can't reach), uneven slabs with high spots, and slabs requiring leveling.
  • Shot blasting is faster on large open warehouse or commercial floors (>5,000 sq ft) and leaves a more consistent profile over large areas.
  • Diamond grinding can address slab lippage (height differences between slab sections) that shot blasting cannot correct.
  • Both require HEPA dust extraction. Neither is appropriate without it.

Silica Dust — The Safety Issue

Concrete dust contains crystalline silica. Repeated inhalation causes silicosis — a progressive, incurable lung disease. OSHA's permissible exposure limit (PEL) is 50 μg/m³ (8-hour TWA).

Professional diamond grinding equipment integrates HEPA-filtered vacuum extraction that captures dust at the source. Residential rental equipment does not. This is the primary reason DIY diamond grinding is not recommended and why acid etching (which creates no abrasive dust) remains tempting — despite producing inadequate results.
